LNP splits in Brisbane’s DST battle

“The middle part of the day in Queensland is too hot so we need an extra hour in the afternoon. It will greatly benefit our business.”

Stephen Bradbury doesn’t want Queensland as the last state to oppose daylight savings time.He is credited with the following:Cameron Whitfield

He also supported Stephen Bradbury, the Winter Olympic gold medalist. Bradbury didn’t want Queensland being the last state to finish in standard time this summer.

“I remember the trial that happened when I was a kid,” he said. “When you return from school, the first thing that you look forward is the start of daylight saving time. This gives you more time to ride your bike with your friends and get out there.

Schreiner led the charge for change for the second year in a row. In February, Schreiner marked the 30th Anniversary of the DST referendum’s failure to bring the case forward for a new trial.

There were 1,835,727 state voters at the time of the 1992 referendum. 54.5 percent of Queenslanders had voted against daylight savings time. This number has increased to 3,377.476 as of the 2020 state elections.

Schreiner claimed that the referendum conducted 30 years ago would not have any weight today.

He stated, “It is unfair that a large number of Queenslanders did no vote in this,”

“Queensland has undergone incredible changes over the last 30 years.”

Schreiner said the legislation already exists—the DST Act of 1990, which was repealed in a referendum three years later.

He said, “It’s five-pages.” It is easy to submit to Parliament. Change the dates all you need to do.

However, Schreiner would not have been satisfied if he had hoped to get some support from the National Liberals of George Street.

David Cresafuli, Queensland’s opposition leader, said that while he respects Schreiner’s views and would not allow daylight saving to be introduced in any government he runs.

He said, “I’m sure that he understands my differing views because I have lived on both sides of this country.”

“I will not do anything that would cause this place to be divided.”

Geographic divide is widely considered to be the greatest stumbling block. The state’s northwest side is strongly opposed.

The southeast corner of Queensland has been urged to leave the double-time state and go it alone.

Broken Hill is found in western New South Wales at Central Time. This time it aligns with Adelaide, Darwin and Sydney rather than Sydney.

Schreiner stated, “Ultimately, I believe prosecuting the entire state is the best way to go. Then letting people voice their opinions.”

“If they suggest there is more than one timezone in Queensland, that can be considered.”

The state government was asked to comment.
