SUB.CO’s Australia to Oman cable arrives in Perth

Sopco announces Australia’s first submarine express cable (Oman Australia Cable) which made landfall in Perth.

Bevan Slattery, the founder, proposed the project as a new venture in 2019. The route would run from Perth to Oman between July 2021 and April 2022.

SUB.CO can be connected to the Indigo cable system which provides connectivity between Australia and Europe.

The new cable connects Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East to deliver the fastest possible latency. It uses optical technology to support up to 36 terabytes of data per second, equivalent to streaming millions on-demand movies per second. .

“Big thanks to the entire team at Subco and especially Lee, Carlos and Celia who have been there since day one on this trip and Jason S and Tom who have been such a key role in promoting the network. We passed the commercial traffic test after another month of testing!!” says Slattery.

Subsea cables are currently responsible for more than 95% of Australia’s international connectivity. Although the number has increased to meet increasing demand, cables often follow similar routes and can be subject to the exact same failure points.

Slattery claims that the submarine cables linking Europe/Middle East and Asia run through a single 100-mile stretch of water at the Strait of Malacca. This is one of the busiest and most active shipping routes in the world.

All cables from Western Australia go along the same route, and all have the same point for failure. They all pass through the Sunda Strait to reach Singapore. The OAC will change this situation.” adds Slattery.

Slattery explained that in 2021, the first cable landed in Perth. Currently, all submarine cables connecting Europe/Middle East/Asia pass through a single 100 mile stretch of water in Strait of Malacca. It is one of the busiest fishing areas in the world. The busiest shipping lanes and most seismically active.

He said, “The cables that originate in Western Australia pass through Sunda Strait to Singapore.”

“Since the Oman-Australia cable avoids the Sunda and Malacca Straits, it should also avoid many cables occurring in those locations.”

Slattery announced that a live broadcast will be made on LinkedIn.
